Kemptville, ON, July 8, 2008 - Kemptville District Hospital is attracting funding even as provincial budgets tighten up, reported CEO Colin Goodfellow at the Hospital's Annual General Meeting June 26. The Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), the body which funds area hospitals, awarded Kemptville special one-time funding and an increase in base funding to recognize growth. Goodfellow said the rationale behind funding allocations is always a bit vague: "I believe the fact that we are 13% more efficient than the norm [according to provincial statistics] was a factor in the one-time funding support." The growth funding, which is added to the hospital's ongoing base budget, was particularly welcomed. This is the first time in many years that any small hospital has been eligible for growth funding, and received it. "For three years Kemptville has been making the case to both the LHIN and the Province that small hospitals need to be eligible for growth funding," said Goodfellow. He attributes the breakthrough this year to the Champlain LHIN being responsible for local hospital funding. "One real upside of the Local Health Integration Networks is that people making decisions actually see and experience the growth in south Ottawa and North Grenville; Health Ministry folks in Toronto just could not relate to this".
