Celebrate the science of your life National Medical Laboratory Week, April 19-23
"Medical Laboratory Science - The Science of Your Life" is the theme for a national campaign launched by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) during National Medical Laboratory Week, April 19 to 23, 2004.
"Medical laboratory professionals are Canada's third largest group of health care workers. They plan an important role in maintaining your health throughout your life," says Patti Boyd, Manager of the Kemptville District Hospital lab. "In fact, approximately 85 per cent of all physicians' decisions regarding diagnosis and treatment are based on laboratory test results."
Medical laboratory technologists conduct laboratory tests on blood, body fluids and body tissue, and interpret results. Test results provide critical information used by doctors to diagnose and treat illness and to maintain their patients' health.
Medical laboratory scientists work in medical and research laboratories. Their knowledge and expertise contribute to innovations in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease and other medical conditions.
Medical laboratory assistants perform pre-analytical functions, such as collecting and processing specimens and preparing special chemicals called reagents for use in testing.
Kemptville District Hospital is planning an open house and laboratory tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 21.
"The medical laboratory profession is facing a serious human resource shortage," said Ms. Boyd. "CSMLS is working with our provincial society to identify the extent of the shortage and to advocate for action by governments at the provincial and federal levels. We want to ensure that the people of Ontario have access to high quality medical testing now and in the years to come."
