Kemptville, ON, August 20, 2008 - Some flowers, a fresh coat of paint, new flags and a couple good signs have made a small but meaningful difference outside Kemptville District Hospital. Recently, the Foundation recruited a young student volunteer to transform the soil around its Gift from the Heart Memorial. Courtney Vivarais, a student at Cornwall Collegiate Vocation School, had spent several weeks of her summer volunteering with Laurie LaPorte-Piticco, Physiotherapist Assistant at KDH. During her last week Alex Heath, Director of the Foundation and Manager of Communications, uncovered her passion for gardening. In a couple of days, Vivarais drew up new landscaping with advice and supplies from local nurseries. She recruited the brawny Dennis Piche from KDH Maintenance to dig a flower bed out of sod and deal with the growing weed problem. Dennis later joined his partner Harold Westendorp in lowering the Hospital flagpoles for a fresh painting and new flags. To top it off, new signs were installed to help guide patients and visitors into the Hospital. Kemptville District Hospital prides itself on working without a deficit. However, its financial vigilance still allows for some ‘cosmetic’ improvements. "We’re a proud member of this community", said Heath, "and we love to show it."
