Enhanced surgical services please patients
Expanded surgical services at Kemptville District Hospital are already receiving rave reviews from grateful patients.
As of July 19, KDH as been offering surgery three full days a week, an increase in operating room time from just two half-days per month.
"We're providing a valuable service to this expanding community," said surgeon Dr. Jim Blakslee. "It's well organized, with the best equipment available and a well-trained team."
Other members of the team are anesthetist Dr. David A. Jones; internist and hospital Chief of Staff Dr. Larry Schnurr; Day Surgery Outpatient Clinic Team Leader Julie Summers; recovery room nurse Bonnie Eastman and CSR (Central Sterilization Resource) technician Wendy Kirker.
"This is a direction we've wanted to go for some time," said Ms. Summers. "We've had positive feedback already from patients. They're quite impressed."
Dr. Blakslee has been associated with KDH for five years providing clinic services and inpatient consultation. With the expansion of OR services, Dr. Blakslee said he will have "more of a constant presence" at the hospital.
A markedly expanded number of procedures is being offered, noted Dr. Blakslee. These include minimally invasive surgeries such as laparoscopic cholecystectomies; laparoscopic appendectomies; tension-free hernia repairs and surgical treatment for diseases of the breast. Dr. Blakeslee said plans call for an expansion to include major abdominal surgery including cancer treatment. KDH is continuing to provide speedy cancer prevention service through screening colonoscopies.
