Kemptville District Hospital welcomes Dr. Tara McCallan
North Grenville's newest family physician is looking forward to the advantages of practising in a small town, rural setting.
Dr. Tara McCallan, a 2001 graduate from the medical school at Dalhousie University in Halifax, will be practising on a part time basis starting September 13. She will be joining colleague Dr. Eric Wooltorton at the KDH Health Centre.
A native of the Yukon now living in Ottawa, Dr. McCallan sees many advantages to practising family medicine in a smaller community. "You get to have a relationship with the patient over the long term," she said. "I did a locum in Almonte and that was my favourite experience of all my locums, and I wanted a situation similar to that."
Dr. McCallan said patients in North Grenville have the advantage of access to hospital care close to home. "If people are really ill they can be near their families," she said. "It makes people heal faster if they have support."
Dr. McCallan will be working at the KDH Health Centre Monday mornings, full days Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Thursday mornings. The rest of her time will be devoted to caring for her two-month-old daughter Ruth. Dr. McCallan's husband, Andrew, is a computer engineer.
Dr. McCallan will be commuting from the city for the time being but plans to relocate in the future.
