Media Release - June 30, 2009

Kemptville, ON, June 30, 2009 - The Boards of Kemptville District Hospital and Kemptville District Hospital Foundation held their separate Annual General Meetings on the evening of Thursday, June 25th.

The first AGM of the night was the Foundation's. John Curtis, President of the KDH Foundation, presented the annual report for 2008-2009, which was a busy and successful year for the Foundation. Funds raised came from a variety of sources, including major gifts, planned giving, annual giving, grants and special events. The Foundation also continues to collect on pledges for the Lean on Me campaign. Mr. Curtis also remarked on how gratifying it is, after such an outstanding fundraising effort, to see the fruits of the Board's labors underway, in the form of the giant construction crane currently located at the back of the hospital.

Special mention was made of the KDH staff tournament, which raised $17,000 and the Annual Gala, which raised over $70,000. These initiatives, among others, enabled the Foundation to transfer $500,000 to the Kemptville District Hospital in 2008-2009, designated towards equipment purchases.

Mr. Curtis also took the opportunity in his remarks at the AGM to welcome Linda Bell, who was appointed Director of the Foundation and Manager of Hospital Communications on June 1, 2009.

The firm Marcil Lavallée of Ottawa performed the Foundation's annual audit and reported satisfactory results.

Doug Hughes presented a report on behalf of the Governance Committee. Nominated, and accepted, to the KDH Foundation Board for 2009-2010 were: Kerry Carnegie, Hugh O'Neill and Jim McManaman. John Curtis will continue as President and Dermid O'Farrell has been named Vice-President of the Board. Mr. Curtis thanked Mr. Hughes and Marilyn Seymour, who have retired from the Board and welcomed the new members.

In closing, Mr. Curtis recognized the hard work of previous and current Board members, other volunteers and staff, and expressed great expectations for the year ahead.

The Kemptville District Hospital Annual General Meeting followed the Foundation's meeting.

Alexandra Pontbriand, Chair of the KDH Board of the Directors, reported on an eventful year for the Hospital, with the announcement of the redevelopment approval in November 2008 and culminating with ground breaking ceremony and start of construction in May 2009.

Hospital achievements in 2008-2009 highlighted by Mrs. Pontbriand included improvements to the orientation offered to new board members; the strong financial position of the Hospital; an excellent relationship with the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN); an enhanced communications strategy and the arrival of a new Hospital Communications Manager; approval of a strategic plan with strong future vision and the leadership role KDH has taken with the aging at home initiative.

In his report, Colin Goodfellow, CEO of the Kemptville District Hospital, noted that the Hospital redevelopment plan of three years ago, which was originally a $10 million emergency room redevelopment, has morphed into a $23 million addition which will double the Hospital's square footage.

Mr. Goodfellow also reported on the statistics for the year, noting that the Emergency department had its busiest year in history, with just fewer than 18,000 visits and the Interim Long-term Care program had over 99% occupancy in its 12 beds this year. The program continues to receive praise from residents and families alike and underscores the need for services for the elderly.

Importantly, KDH's Aging at Home programs, a community collaborative to integrate services for seniors, had a very successful first year as hundreds of seniors received new and expanded services in Lanark, North Leeds and North Grenville.

The Hospital's financial position was reported on by Andrew Pinhey, CGA, Director of Financial Services at KDH, and financial statements, audited by Marcil Lavallée in Ottawa, were presented. The Hospital remains in a very strong financial position.

Lis Angus, Chair of the KDH Board's Governance Committee, put forth four nominations. Appointed to the Board for 2009-2010 were Gayle Poapst, Claude Naud, John Sims and Pete Larocque. Mrs. Angus and Mrs. Pontbriand both recognized the contributions of retiring Board members Ken Mews, who served 12-years, Al Warren, Jeff Ritskes and Wendy-Anne Jones.

Reports were also presented to the Board by Mary Gervais, President of the KDH Auxiliary and Dr. Lawrence Schnurr, who recognized KDH's committed physicians.

In closing the AGM, Mrs. Pontbriand thanked the Board for their commitment to the hospital and expressed great excitement for the future.
