KDH takes part in Ottawa Race Weekend
Kemptville, ON, June 4, 2007 – A group of staff, board members and friends recently completed the Ottawa Race Weekend ½ Marathon. The idea to enter the event came about in late January when the group of runners and walkers wanted to take on a healthy initiative for 2007.
The Mission of The Ottawa Race Weekend combines competition, participation and fundraising to make a distinctive contribution to the health of its community. Dale Kirkpatrick, President of the KDH Board of Directors shared his thoughts about the day. “For me, running in this event allowed the opportunity to practice what we preach, "Building Healthy Communities". I am very pleased there were members of the Hospital and Foundation boards, KDH management and staff as well as supporters of the Hospital who participated in this event. Everyone had an enjoyable time and more importantly improved their stamina and overall health in the process.”
Jenny Salte, Manager of Health Information at KDH also participated in the run. “I feel blessed and privileged to be healthy and able to run the half-marathon with so many other enthusiastic people.” To that note there were more than 8,000 enthusiastic runners and walkers that took part.
Lis Angus, President of the KDH Auxiliary was one of the many walkers that lined up at the starting line. “The Race Weekend organizers welcome walkers as well as runners. Walkers take longer to finish the course, naturally, but the training is just as rigorous and the challenge to accomplish a new ‘personal best’ is just as powerful for walkers as for runners. My walking buddy and I started the half-marathon strong, and kept up a faster pace than we had ever achieved in training. We were very glad that the weather stayed cool – and we even welcomed the light rain that started mid-morning! I ended up bettering my last year’s time by seven minutes, and I felt really good at the end. I’m already thinking about how I can improve for next time.”
It wasn’t just KDH runners and walkers out to support the event. More than 25 volunteers from the Hospital set out before dawn to install the final water station on the route. It took 25 tables for the nearly 40 thousand cups of Gatorade and water.
Dale Kirkpatrick finished the event with this in mind. “Our collective objective would be that everyone makes a concerted effort to lead a healthier lifestyle.” Good advice for an organization that strives to build healthier communities.
