KDH's New Site Bringing Doctors to
Underserved Barrhaven & Manotick
Kemptville, ON, May 2010 - At a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Manotick, Kemptville District Hospital CEO Colin Goodfellow made an announcement that was enthusiastically received by those in attendance. By this time next year, there will be 20 new doctors practicing in the Barrhaven & Manotick areas with the creation of the Rideau Valley Family Health Group and the Rideau Valley Urgent Care Centre. Kemptville District Hospital (KDH) is helping the new organizations get up and running but the centres will operate as separate entities once established.
"In the last review of the Hospital's strategic plan, we realized that a significant portion of our catchment area – namely Manotick and Barrhaven – were not appropriately serviced by the medical community," said Goodfellow. "Fifty years ago, the people of Manotick helped build Kemptville District Hospital. Fifty years ago though, there were also a lot more cows than people here. Manotick and Barrhaven have now become some of the most densely populated areas in Eastern Ontario - and with the fewest amount of Family Physicians. We have a responsibility to help these people get the medical care they need".
The Rideau Valley Family Health Group will become home to ten family physicians, while the Rideau Valley Urgent Care Centre will house another ten doctors and will be capable of doing about 70% of what a hospital ER can do. Also included in the building will be diagnostic imaging capability, specialist clinics and a telemedicine centre.
The 16,000 square foot building will be located on Greenbank, north of Strandherd and should be operational by mid-2011.
