KDH celebrates Nurses Week with Nightingale Lantern Ceremony
Kemptville, Ontario, May 3, 2010 – Florence Nightingale
Kemptville District Hospital (KDH) will be celebrating Nursing Week from May 10th to 14th with a series of events. Celebrations will kick off with a Florence Nightingale Commemorative Lantern Ceremony on May 10th in the Hospital’s main lobby. All active or retired nurses and health care providers from the local community are invited to participate in this special evening.
Florence Nightingale is recognized throughout health care for her many contributions to the field of nursing, including the creation of the world’s first secular School of Nursing. She was also a pioneer in the field of what is now known as occupational health. She was known as the ?Lady with the Lamp?, as she frequently made rounds of wounded soldiers at night, lighting her way with a lantern.
Catherine Van Vliet, Director of Patient Services & Integration at KDH remarked that ?this year marks the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s death. The Lantern Ceremony is continuing her legacy of care and the importance of sharing knowledge within the profession of nursing?. The passing of the Lantern at the ceremony signifies the passing and sharing of knowledge and information from one nurse or health care professional to the next.
Following the first-ever Lantern Ceremony at KDH, the Lantern will remain lit in the Hospital’s lobby for the duration of Nurses Week.
The details of the ceremony are:
