KDH a model for Ontario Hospitals

Kemptville hospital sets two new province-wide benchmarks for excellence in care

Few would guess that hospitals in Toronto would have anything to learn from a small town community hospital. But that's what happened recently when Kemptville District Hospital received calls from two Toronto health care facilities wanting to learn more about the amazing success of KDH's pain and symptom management program.

KDH had received news that patients responding to a satisfaction survey administered by the Ontario Hospital Association reported they were 100 per cent satisfied with the pain management treatment they received during their stay. At the same time, the hospital lab received a mark of 99.39 per cent - among the highest in Ontario - following a survey by a provincial accreditation team in late April.

"Kemptville staff have shown once again why we are a leading hospital in Ontario," said Chief Executive Officer Colin Goodfellow. "It's no surprise to me that more and more people from Ottawa are coming here for top quality care."

All patients responding to satisfaction survey questions related to pain management rated the program as excellent, said Lynn Hall, KDH Director of Patient Services. She noted she has been contacted by staff at Toronto General and Toronto Western hospitals, interested in learning more about the program at KDH.

Launched in the spring of 2004 thanks to a $50,000 gift from the late Hazel Taylor, the pain and symptom management program at Kemptville District Hospital was designed to provide compassionate care for patients with life-threatening and terminal illnesses.

"You would think the big hospitals, with all of the resources and the staff that they have, do everything the best," said Ms. Hall. "But we deliver the best quality of care here because our staff believe in our community and they are complete professionals."

Manager of Laboratory Services Patti Boyd noted the recent accreditation award shows the lab has met a range of quality management criteria, as well as recognizing the exemplary work of the lab and its staff. "Whether you're large or small, the requirements are the same," said Ms. Boyd. "I'm very proud of our staff. They were very committed, and worked with the cooperation of the hospital to achieve these excellent scores."
