KDH to purchase X-Ray unit, Campaign reaches final goal

The Kemptville District Hospital Foundation has announced the fundraising campaign launched in the spring of 2002 to purchase a new X-Ray/Fluoroscopy Unit has reached its goal.

Kemptville District Hospital Executive Director Lynne Budgell stated a purchase order for the equipment was issued Thursday, November 6 and the new unit should be installed and operational by mid-January.

"We would like to thank all the donors whose generous gifts made this possible," said Ms. Budgell, "and we are very much looking forward to inviting everyone to an open house in the new year to see what their gifts have provided to our patients."

The campaign began due to the condition of the hospital's existing equipment, which was more than 25 years old. Although originally designed to perform a wide range of diagnostic tests, the equipment by the spring of 2002 was producing only standard x-rays. By the end of February 2003, the equipment had failed completely, leaving the hospital with only a single, smaller x-ray machine to handle all necessary testing.

Faced with an initial quote of $532,216 to replace the X-Ray/Fluoroscopy Unit, the hospital board of directors requested the development of a set of specifications and asked that the project be opened up for tenders. The team established to evaluate the tenders consisted of David Price, Director of Radiology at Queensway-Carleton Hospital; Dr. Alfredo Formoso, consultant radiologist; and Shelley Bottan, Medical Radiation Technologist at KDH.

The team visited various hospital sites to properly evaluate the different types of equipment available, and provided the administration at KDH with a signed recommendation Friday, Oct. 31. At a special meeting of the hospital Governance Committee Monday, Nov. 3, the purchase of Toshiba Fluoroscope 90 was approved at a total cost of $437,000. Renovations needed to accommodate the new equipment will cost an additional $70,000, noted Ms. Budgell.

The new, state-of-the-art equipment will bring dramatically improved diagnostic images from a wide variety of possible tests, as well as improved patient comfort and safety.

In the KDH Foundation's campaign, more than $445,000 was raised from a wide variety of individuals, businesses, service clubs and community groups. Fundraising events included a series of barbecues hosted by the OPP; the 2002 Monte Carlo Night Gala; 2002 Kemptville Truck Centre golf tournament; and the June 2003 Bed Race for X-Ray. Donors also responded generously to a 2003 spring mailing, and donation coupons placed in the spring and summer editions of the Foundation's "Health Matters" newsletter also attracted substantial donations.

"We would like to express our special thanks to each and every one of these donors," said Foundation Chair John Curtis. "We couldn't have done this without you!"
