Rave reviews for Kemptville District Hospital surgical team

A small-town surgical team has been earning praise from some big-city patients since Kemptville District Hospital recently began offering day surgery.

The expansion of surgical services offered at KDH this fall is having an area-wide impact, reaching out to the communities of Ottawa South. Many primary care physicians in the city are looking for a place to refer their patients for both screening procedures and surgical treatments.

"We had a letter and a food basket yesterday from a patient in the city," said surgeon Dr. Jim Blakslee. "We've had excellent feedback."

Dr. Blakslee noted that North Grenville and area residents are also very thankful to have surgical services once again, after a decade in which these services were unavailable in their community.

Procedures offered at KDH in the past few months have included laparoscopic cholecystectomies (a non-invasive procedure used to remove the gallbladder); abdominal hernia repairs and breast biopsies. Also scheduled in the near future are colon cancer surgery and a bowel resection.

The team is very much looking forward to a major expansion targeted for January 2006, when a second operating room should be up and running. "This will double our capacity and make space for the new surgical specialists who are coming on," said Dr. Blakslee.

Plans are being finalized to welcome specialists in gynaecology and orthopaedics. "We're committed to growing services for a growing community," said KDH Chief Executive Officer Colin Goodfellow.

"We're very excited and very encouraged," said Dr. Blakslee on behalf of the KDH surgical team. "We have great support from the (hospital) administration and the community."
