KDH Volunteer Program

What our volunteers do

• Welcome patients, visitors, and families and assist with information and wayfinding
• Support patients and visitors at the Emergency Department entrance
• Assist visitors with the hospital parking system
• Deliver approved items to the laboratory and other areas of the hospital
• Support the Gift Shop and Coffee Bar
• Provide companionship and a friendly presence to patients during mealtimes
• Participate in hand hygiene auditing
• Provide Spiritual Care support as part of the hospital’s Spiritual Care program
• Assist with other approved volunteer activities based on the needs of the hospital

How to Become a Volunteer

Step 1 – Apply

Complete the KDH Volunteer Application Form and arrange for two references to complete a KDH Volunteer Reference Form.

To help maintain confidentiality, reference forms must be submitted directly to KDH by the referee. Completed applications and reference forms may be emailed to kdh_volunteer@kdh.on.ca, or mailed or dropped off in a sealed envelope to:

Step 2 – Application Review and Interview

Once a completed application and both references have been received, they will be reviewed by the Volunteer Coordinator. Selected applicants may be invited to an interview to discuss their interests, availability, suitability for the program, and current volunteer opportunities.

Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee an interview, placement, or volunteer position. Volunteer placements are based on the needs of the hospital, available opportunities and shifts, and the outcome of the application and screening process.

Step 3 – Screening and Onboarding

Applicants who are selected to proceed following the interview will be guided through KDH’s volunteer screening and onboarding requirements. These include:

• a Vulnerable Sector Check;

• Occupational Health medical clearance, including required immunization and tuberculosis (TB) screening documentation;

• completion of required online training;

• KDH Volunteer Orientation; and

• role-specific orientation or shadow training, where applicable.

Applicants must successfully complete all required screening and onboarding steps before beginning a volunteer placement.

The Volunteer Coordinator will provide instructions and support throughout the process.

Shifts

Our volunteers generally commit to one regular four-hour shift per week. Consistent attendance helps provide reliable support to our patients, visitors, staff, and hospital programs. Available shifts and placements vary depending on the current needs of the hospital and the Volunteer Program.

Why Volunteers Matter

Volunteers play an important role in helping create a welcoming and supportive experience for patients, families, and visitors at KDH. They are often among the first people someone encounters when arriving at the hospital and provide a friendly, helpful presence throughout their visit.

Depending on their assigned role, volunteers may welcome and provide information to patients and visitors, assist with wayfinding and the parking system, support the Emergency Department entrance, deliver items to the lab, and assist with other approved non-clinical activities. Through these roles, volunteers provide valuable support to our patients, visitors, staff, and hospital community.

Opportunities for Students

KDH welcomes students who are interested in gaining meaningful volunteer experience in a hospital environment.

High school students applying to the Volunteer Program must be interested in pursuing postsecondary education or a career in healthcare or a health-related field. Postsecondary students are also welcome to apply.

Student volunteers are expected to meet the same application, screening, training, attendance, and commitment requirements as other KDH volunteers. Volunteers who have established sufficient experience with KDH may request a reference for future educational, employment, or volunteer opportunities.
